What to Pack for a Winter Safari
With peak safari season approaching, we thought we’d let you in on our must-pack list to ensure an unforgettable adventure during the winter months (May to August). Following this guide will make sure that you get to view and traverse the landscapes without freezing or breaking a sweat.
If you only remember one thing from this guide, may it be the concept of “layers” and you’re halfway there. For a more granular breakdown, and the ultimate luggage guide, keep reading!

Winter Safari Wardrobe
Mornings in May and August are crisp with average temperatures of 13°C. However, with an average low of +/- 9°C, June and July mornings will be when those fleece layers really come in handy. Afternoons in the winter can be quite balmy, with temperatures reaching a height of up to 28°C.
Chilly mornings can feel extra crisp on our open safari vehicles. While we provide blankets and hot water bottles for the morning game drives, we still suggest dressing in layers. Here are a few practical pointers to help you dress for your winter safari at Umkumbe Bush Lodge:
1. Aparka or puffer jacket: You will need a warm layer for the start and the end of every day. If you are tight on space, opt for a down or puffer jacket as they can pack compactly.
2. Lightweight fleece jacket or sweatshirt: You can layer this under your warm jacket and over a short sleeve shirt, especially if you easily feel cold.
3. Light windbreaker: Bring a lighter jacket in addition to the thick jacket for mornings and evenings. As Umkumbe Bush Lodge is located in a summer rainfall area, a waterproof jacket is optional.
4. Muted, earthy colours: As a rule of thumb, we encourage safari-goers to wear unobtrusive hues such as beiges, khakis and browns that blend in with the surroundings. Bright colours and white are reflective and will make you visible to animals, potentially scaring them away. We would not recommend black or white clothes.
5. Sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats: Remember our safari vehicles are open-roofed, so wearing sunglasses and a hat to protect you from the sun. Our curios shop also sells safari hats if you don't have space in your suitcase.
6. A scarf and gloves: Believe it or not, African mornings can become that cold. We would even encourage you to pack a beanie.
7. Thermal underwear and warm pyjamas: Our rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, so you can turn up the heat, but nothing beats the comfort of snuggling up with warm pyjamas in premium quality linen as you drift off to the sound of the bush.
8. Swimwear: No, we did not add this to the list by mistake. Afternoons on a winter safari can be warm enough for swimming. It’s better to have it and not use it than to be sorry. No need for towels as we provide them.
9. Walking shoes: If you plan on participating in one of our walking safaris, we will require you to wear closed shoes to protect your feet.
Safari & Leisure Time Equipment
Make the most of your safari with gear to help you spot wildlife and capture them in your memories for years to come. Although optional, we would encourage you to pack the following:
1. Binoculars: Whether you’re an avid birder or would just like to dabble in the hobby while you are on safari, binoculars will come in handy. We sell binocs at our curios shop if you do not own a pair.
2. A camera, charger and extra memory cards: The best camera is the one you have at hand when action strikes, but even the latest smartphone likely won’t do the natural beauty of the bush any justice. If you would like to capture the essence of nature, we suggest researching the best cameras for wildlife photography. If you are on safari simply to savour nature and don’t care much about getting it on camera, that’s also fine with us.
3. A good book: With plenty of leisure time between game drives a good book can provide entertainment while you kick back and take a break from your phone. Our treehouse area is also stacked with books for your enjoyment.
Toiletries & Medication
When preparing for your safari adventure, it’s essential to pack the right toiletries and medications. While we stock a small selection of basic toiletries in our curio shop, it’s always a good idea to come prepared. Here are some extras to include in your luggage in addition to the usual:
1. Sunscreen: No one wants to look like they’ve had too much of the African sun after a safari. Make sure to pack sunscreen with a high SPF to protect you against sunburn or heat stroke.
2. Insect repellent: Although Umkumbe Bush Lodge isn’t in a high malaria area – especially not during the winter months – the risk always exists. Pack and use insect repellent that contains DEET and consult your doctor before embarking on a safari. You can also purchase mosquito repellent at our curios shop.
3. Medications: If you take prescription medication, remember to pack enough for your trip. We also encourage you to pack a small medical kit with the basics.
